History and Excellence
The Department of Biology and Biotechnology (DBB) is a young department, in fact it was born in 2012 from the aggregation of some realities that previously belonged to different departments, the Animal Biology, Genetics and Microbiology "A. Buzzati Traverso”, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology. The aggregation of disciplines and skills from five distinct departments of the biological area represents its strength, that is the multidisciplinarity, a fundamental element of modern research. The Scientific Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) that have merged into the organization of the DBB are developed in numerous areas of Biology which testify, thanks to the quality of the scientific production accumulated so far, precisely this transversality. Quality research is conducted in the DBB and this is testified by the fact that the DBB is one of the 180 Departments of Excellence awarded in 2018 by MIUR. Quality and multidisciplinary research ranging from pure basic to applied research (see Research Topics). Research is often funded by prestigious foundations and government grants. The DBB is dynamic because alongside its soul devoted to research also teaching. Six degree courses belong to the DBB, the teaching quality of which is attested by the satisfaction of those who have attended them, which overall stands at high values (> 85%). For the educational offer, see the dedicated pages.
The DBB is currently the coordination seat of the Research Doctorate in Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology, of the Research Doctorate in Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology of the IUSS and of the Masters of Human Nutrition and Regulatory Disciplines “G. Benzi ”and is included in the Research Doctorates in Biomedical Sciences and Bioengineering and Bioinformatics.
